Germantown is a census-designated place located about 25 miles to the northwest of Washington, D.C. and 126 miles to the southwest of Philadelphia. Although Germantown has not yet incorporated itself as a city, it is already the third most populous community in the state of Maryland after Baltimore and Columbia. Germantown has a long history of settlement by German, English, and Scottish residents, and European settlement of the area can be traced back to the 18th century. The population and the economy of Germantown have both been steadily and significantly growing since the 1980's. 

Shopping and Dining

Residents of Germantown real estate don't need to leave their city of residence to find a wide variety of shopping opportunities. Everyday grocery and pharmacy purchases can be made at the Wegmans on Seneca Meadows Parkway, the Giant on Leaman Farm Road or Middlebrook Road, or the Walmart located on Frederick Road. The Milestone Center on Frederick Road and the Germantown Square Shopping Center offer more shopping options that are conveniently located to Germantown real estate. 

Among the fine dining restaurants in and around Germantown are Il Pizzico and India Palace Bar & Tandoor- both of which are located on Frederick Road- and Le Palais on Main Street in Gaithersburg. Those looking for a good Chinese restaurant near home can try Cafe Hong Kong on Middlebrook Road or Peking Palace on Wisteria Drive. Residents of Germantown real estate who are on the lookout for the best pizza in town can try Vocelli Pizza on Middlebrook Road, Milano's Pizza & Pasta on Wisteria Drive, or Manginos Pizza on Frederick Road. Fast food options in Germantown include Chick-Fil-A and Chipotle, both of which are located on Century Boulevard. 

Parks and Recreation

Despite its close proximity to the Washington D.C. area, Germantown is surrounded by parks and green areas such as the Black Hill Regional Park to the northwest, the Hoyles Mill Conservation Park to the west, the Great Seneca Stream Valley Park to the east and the Seneca Creek State Park to the south. Smaller parks located towards the center of town include the Germantown Square Urban Park along Germantown Road ad Middlebrook Road, Waring Station Local Park located along Waring Station Road and Stoney Bottom Road, and Gunners Branch Local Park.  

The Germantown Community Center is an important recreational resource located in Germantown. The Germantown Community Center offers not only athletic activities, but also opportunities for area residents to explore interests in art, music, dance, and more. The Maryland SoccerPlex & Discovery Sports Center is another important recreational resource in the area. Located in South Germantown Recreational Park, the Maryland SoccerPlex & Discovery Center offers indoor and outdoor soccer leagues for athletes of all ages. In addition, the complex organizes leagues for other sports such as lacrosse, field hockey, baseball, and more. Other recreational resources in Germantown include Anytime Fitness on Leaman Farm Road and Planet Fitness on Wisteria Drive. 


The city's cost of living index- at 116.0- shows that living in Germantown is significantly more expensive in Germantown than it is in the Untied States on average. However, this high cost of living is to some extent offset by a medan household income that is $10,000 more than the median household income in the state of Maryland overall. Also, the unemployment rate in Germantown was lower at 5.3 percent (as of July of 2013) than the rate in Maryland overall (7.0 percent). Although the unemployment rate is fairly low in Germantown, many residents must commute outside of the city for their jobs. Only about 14 percent of Germantown's workers both live and work in their city of residence.

Schools, Health, and Transportation

Germantown real estate is located within the Montgomery County Public School District. Altogether, Montgomery County Public Schools runs two high schools, four middle schools, and 13 elementary schools in Germantown. There are also quite a few private schools located in Germantown. These include Butler School on Germantown Road, Covenant Christian School, and Energy Child Development Center on Germantown Road. Residents of Germantown real estate can continue their education past the secondary school level without leaving home by attending classes at the Germantown campus of Montgomery College, which is located on Observation Drive.

The Adventist HealthCare Germantown Emergency Center on Germantown Road provides emergency healthcare services in Germantown. Another healthcare center located near Germantown real estate is the Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation Hospital, which is located on Medical Center Drive in Rockville. There are many family doctors practicing in Germantown, such as those at the Potomac Physicians Association on Germantown Road and Family HealthCare on Boland Farm Road. 

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation offers some public transportation services in Germantown. Also, there is both a Greyhound station and an Amtrak station located nearby in Rockville.
