Named after the Potomac River, the community of Potomac is a census-designated place that is located 12 miles to the northwest of Washington, D.C. One of the most prominent features of the community is the extreme affluence of its residents. Potomac is one of the most affluent communities in the entire country according to median household income. First settled in the early 18th century, Potomac was originally known as Offutts Crossroads until its name was changed in 1881. The focal point of Potomac is Potomac Village, which today consists of business offices and upscale shops. Potomac Village is located where Maryland State Highway 189 intersects with Maryland State Highway 190. 

Shopping and Dining

One of the primary shopping destinations in Potomac is located right at the center of the community. Potomac Village shopping options include a Giant, Safeway, Walgreens, and Rite Aid. The Cabin John Mall located on Locks Road is another popular shopping destination in the area. This mall includes a CVS pharmacy, a Giant food store, Leila Fine Gifts & Jewels, Occasions Gift Store, and more. The Shops at Wildwood in Bethesda is a shopping center located about 10 minutes from Potomac. The Shops at Wildwood include clothing stores such as Belina Boutique, Irresistibles, and South Moon Under. 

Fine dining destinations located near Potomac real estate include Normandie Farm Restaurant and Mix Bar and Grille, both of which are located on Falls Road. Nantucket's Reef is a popular seafood restaurant located nearby in Rockville. For creative blends of Asian cuisines, Grand Fusion on East Fortune Terrace and Banana Leaves Asian Cafe on Congressional Lane in Rockville are good choices. When in need of a fast meal, residents of Potomac real estate can head to Five Guys Burgers and Fries on Falls Road, McDonald's on Seven Locks Road, or Chipotle on River Road. 

Parks and Recreation

Potomac is a scenic community that is surrounded by natural areas. The nearby Potomac River features many opportunities for outdoor recreation, and Great Falls Park to the southwest of Potomac extends along the Potomac on both the Virginia and Maryland sides of the river. Heritage Farm Neighborhood Park and Avenel Local Park are two more centrally located Potomac area parks. 

Several golf courses surround the community of Potomac and provide recreational opportunities to residents of Potomac real estate. These include Falls Road Golf Course to the northeast, TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm to the south, and Congressional Country Club to the southeast. 

Potomac Community Recreation Center on Falls Road offers programs that help both children and adults to stay active and engaged in their community. Programs held at the Recreation Center include athletic, artistic, and musical lessons and activities. Area gyms including Fitness by Sheila on MacArthur Boulevard and Planet Fitness in Rockville offer more opportunities for residents of Potomac real estate to stay active and healthy.

Most of those who live in Potomac commute to nearby Washington, D.C. for work, and the daytime population of the community drops by almost 10 percent due to workday commuting. Potomac real estate is notoriously expensive, with the community's median home value being recorded at $842,341 in 2012. However, Potomac offers many benefits to make up for the expense of living in the community, including high quality schools, low population density, and a low unemployment rate.

Schools, Health, and Transportation

There are numerous public and private schools located in Potomac. Montgomery County Public Schools runs public schools in Potomac. Among the public schools in Potomac are Winston Churchill High, Herbert Hoover Middle, Potomac Elementary, Ritchie Park Elementary, Cold Spring Elementary, Beverly Farms Elementary, Bells Mill Elementary, and Wayside Elementary.

Although Montgomery County Public Schools institutions located in Potomac typically rate very high in comparison with schools in the rest of the country, many Potomac parents opt for private schools. There are more private schools than public schools in Potomac. Private high schools in the community include The Bullis School on Falls Road, German School of Washington D.C. on Chateau Drive, and St. Andrews Episcopal School on Postoak Road. 

There are many different hospitals and healthcare institutions located near Potomac. Suburban Hospital on Montrose Road in Rockville can be reached within about 13 minutes of Potomac, and Potomac Prompt Medical Care on Fortune Terrace provides medical services within Potomac itself. Large hospitals located in nearby Washington can typically be reached within 25 or 30 minutes of Potomac. Some of the most prominent Washington hospitals are George Washington University Hospital, Sibley Memorial Hospital, and Providence Hospital

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation offers public transportation services in the area surrounding Potomac.
